WHAT KIND OF OPPORTUNITIES DOES THE LOCAL CHAPTER HAVE THAT I COULD PARTICIPATE IN?
We have different levels of involvement here at GK. For positions, we have the executive team and the faculty representatives. All of our projects are guided by our pillars of academics, leadership, and service. Some longstanding projects are the Alberta Academic Review Interdisciplinary Student's Journal and the Golden Mentors program. We have an average of 3-4 service events a semester that provide plenty of volunteer experience with organizations such as Kids Kottage, Canadian Blood Services, Edmonton Humane Society, and more. Check out our other pages to look at previous projects and get an idea of what events we have every year that members can be involved with.
CAN I COME UP WITH AN EVENT OR PROGRAM TO RUN UNDER GK?
YES! We highly encourage our members to pitch ideas they have for a project/event/program/fundraiser/etc. We want to provide a platform for members to have the financial, marketing, mentoring, and moral support for projects they want to bring to life.
I TRANSFERRED SCHOOLS AND I RECEIVED AN INVITATION TO JOIN GK AT THAT INSTITUTION. CAN I TRANSFER MY MEMBERSHIP TO THE U OF A CHAPTER?
Yes. Contact us and we will connect you to Ian Sankey (Golden Key Director of Canada).
I CHANGED MY ADDRESS AND I DID NOT RECEIVE AN INVITATION. HOW DO I GET IT BACK?
Email us (email@example.com) to let us know and we will forward this to Ian Sankey. He will get HQ to send you your invitation to your new address.
WHAT KIND OF SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AVAILABLE AND HOW DO I APPLY FOR THEM?
Scholarships are available to you on two levels: the national and chapter level. Your chapter gives out 1) reimbursements for GK Summits and a chapter scholarship every year. The chapter scholarship is the most valued scholarship awarded by the chapter and it is given to members who are an excellent example of GK's three pillars of leadership, service, and academics.
On the national level, there are many other scholarships provided to members and they are listed here: https://goldenkey.org/scholarships-awards/listing/
WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO JOIN GK?
Based on being in the top 15% of your faculty. This information is available on our Constitution: For undergraduate students who rank among the top 15% of their class/year group based on cumulative grade performance. For graduate students who have attained a minimum 3.7 GPA.
HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO USE MY REGISTRATION CODE?
Until the end of August of the year following receipt of code.
WHAT IS THE NMRE?
NMRE is the New Member Recognition Event that takes place once a year around November. At this event we celebrate the outstanding academic achievements of new members and formally induct them into the Golden Key International Honour Society!
I PAY A FEE TO BECOME A PART OF GK. WHERE CAN I GO TO SEE WHERE THIS MONEY IS GOING?
Your UofA GK chapter has decided to publish their annual budget to let members know where we get money from and where we put it. We post these budgets on our "Budget" page.
ARE THERE OTHER GK CHAPTERS IN EDMONTON?
Yes! Our neighbour chapter is the MacEwan GK Chapter.
